Skincare - Men vs Women

Due to years of training and experience, we understand that every patient is unique and requires a personalized approach to men's vs women's skincare. You might not know, however, that one of the reasons for this is because the structure of skin differs between men and women. There are actually many notable differences that consequently impact the way that we offer treatment, and these should also influence how you approach your skincare at home.

Find out more about men’s vs women's skincare below and give your daily regimen a boost!

MEN’S SKINCARE
First and foremost, you might be surprised to learn that men boast naturally higher collagen levels, which results in their skin being 25% thicker than women’s skin.
From a young age, collagen starts to gradually decline, which is also reflected in the way that men’s skin ages. The ageing process starts sooner but is a slower, long-term change as opposed to the sudden one in women. Therefore, it pays to introduce products that contain retinol sooner than suggested for women. Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A, an ingredient that minimizes the appearance of wrinkles, among other skin imperfections and limits the onset of fine lines.
Finally, men have a greater ability for natural skin hydration throughout adulthood due to more active oil glands. Skin hydration is a key component in maintaining a healthy, youthful complexion.

WOMEN'S SKINCARE
Women’s skin ages in a different way as it’s able to maintain thickness and moisture levels more consistently than men’s. This is the case right up until menopause, where dramatic changes occur as a result of decreasing estrogen levels. These changes can trigger the onset of adult acne, which is why you may have noticed that products targeted at women include calming, anti-acne ingredients and items such as exfoliants.
In order to compensate for naturally lower sebum levels, women’s skincare also tends to have a large focus on hydrating properties to rejuvenate the skin and maintain smoothness.

PERSONALISED SKINCARE
Many products are unisex, but it’s important to listen to your skin and tailor your skincare routine to your individual needs. There are likely more differences when it comes to men’s skincare vs women’s skincare than you first realized, which is why you should always ask yourself what each product is intended for and what ingredients are used.
